We are just like you. We were tired of spending weekends away, countless dollars on gas, hotel, tolls, and time off work just to get 5 matches in... and the competition was a crap shoot and half the time we'd wrestle kids who lived in the town next to us anyways. We want to save you money, time, and travel expenses to be able to get the matches you need right here in North Jersey. Let's make the elite PA, NY, and CT kids travel to us.
Growing up as an elite youth wrestler, I could go to my town tournament or the event 10 minutes from home and wrestle other state champions and nationally ranked competitors. Due to marketing by tournament hosts, so they can make money, and hold massive events, elite wrestlers no longer wrestle locally. Main Street Wrestling competitions is driving a movement to change that and get elite kids wrestling locally.
We will only charge enough to make these make sense for our staff, we will not gouge you, and much of our profits will go back to local town programs and be put in kids pockets.
$25-40 per wrestler.
$5 per spectator.
No Food stand. Support local restaurants.
The majority of our table help, referees, and staff are paid. We are employing local wrestling people and high school kids. We're investing back in the community.
Wrestling tournaments are intense enough. Growing up on the elite local circuit in Michigan (5 of my friends I wrestled at these events won D1 NCAA Titles) you were only allowed to coach your wrestler in between periods. Mat side yelling was not permitted. Referees will enforce this rule. Violators will be asked to leave the event.
All research and experience for high performance outcomes shows the benefit of wrestlers learning to play the game, instead of being joystick coached by their parent or coach. This allows them to make decisions which ultimately allows them to perform better years from now when it matters and and coaches and parents aren't in their corner at the NCAA Level.
If you don't get 3 matches in during your two hour time here, we will hand you cash for your entry fee and spectator fee. Simple, find the tournament director and let them know. They will hand you cash once they confirm this is accurate.
My D1 NCAA team won 3 Big Ten titles, and placed 2nd at the NCAA Championships. We were so successful because we didn't cut weight. College weigh ins will be 1 hour before you compete. If you want to excel then you need to train that way. We want to train wrestlers to not cut weight so they are prepared to perform at the highest level.
We also think weigh ins 2 hours before an event just make it so you need to be there longer, we dont want to waste your time.
Day before weigh ins do not exist at the NCAA level... therefore training your wrestler for a close to match weigh in teaches them how to be prepared for the next chapter. Plus you dont give up a Friday night for weigh in, and a Saturday for a couple of wrestling matches.
Most wrestling tournaments are hosted out in the middle of nowhere because that allows the host to get the venues for cheap. We want to create an awesome experience for your family that makes it so everyone wants to come. Like watching a baseball game in the park. Most tournaments have huge crowds, a lot of noise, and overall a pretty exhausting environment. Not here. Our events are calm and well run with no more than 100 people in the facility at a time. Main Street Wrestling events are held in cool venues that are walkable to restaurants, ice cream shops, and other local attractions.
This is concept that was born from most of these national events having 22 to 24' circles, and realizing the benefit of this. The match pace becomes faster and wrestlers learn skills that benefit them at the elite level; mat control, zone wrestling, cutting off an opponent, dragging your feet in bound for a score, mat returns on the edge.
This concept is common in other sports - small kids need less space to make the moments of the game happen faster, better training them on the skills that mater to long term performance. ie, how to play the out of bounds line, how to attack on the edge, how to control the center of the circle. You see it in mini-pitches in developmental soccer and half or third of the field for kids football, or a shorter pitching mound in baseball.
When you place a wrestler inside a 40' circle, they don't build these skills as their interactions with the side of the mat is less. Our events are designed around building skill that wins big matches. Because of that, we will adjust the circle size to be between 22-24'.
Yes, we encourage volunteers who are passionate about wrestling and want to help us provide the best experience for local families. Ways to help include: referees, table help, front door help, weigh in help.
